The Fofana effect is already being felt at Sevilla. The French midfielder, who scored against Barcelona, is helping to improve the Andalusian side’s midfield as the club enters the international break in European places after a strong start to the season.
This morning, Sevilla are playing a closed-door friendly against their reserve team as part of their preparations. The non-international players have had three days of rest; Odysseas Vlachodimos, Kochorashvili, Suazo, Robbie Ure, Fran González and Sangante are away with their national teams.
José Ignacio Navarro gave Luis García Plaza the resources to lead a project from the start of the season. The coach had replaced Matías Almeyda in March to fight against relegation. Fofana, who arrived at the end of the transfer window after his move to Olympique de Lyon fell through, is one of Sevilla’s standout signings.
The Milan player has made an immediate impact, both on the pitch and among the supporters. Considered a player of very high quality, he scored against Barcelona and has shown that he can pose an attacking threat, even though it is not his primary role. Last season in Italy, he scored two goals in 33 Serie A appearances and provided four assists, three in the league and one in the Italian Cup.
His teammate Jon Guridi recently highlighted the Frenchman’s contribution, recalling his spell at Milan and his experience in European competitions. He also stressed Fofana’s physical and technical qualities, saying that he brings a great deal to the side and can raise its level of quality.
Luis García Plaza said Fofana had not initially been a request of his, but that he asked the club to take the opportunity when it arose. The Frenchman is now an undisputed figure in his midfield. According to reports, the Madrid-born coach would rotate the players around him according to the needs of each match, while Fofana’s experience and tactical and technical qualities would complement the very high level shown by Lucien Agoumé.
His goal against Barcelona made him the ninth Sevilla player to score in LaLiga 2026/27. No club has more different scorers across Europe’s five major leagues this season, with Brighton and Hove Albion and Inter Milan also having nine.
On paper, Fofana is the signing most likely to add the most to the squad this season. As Sevilla’s most highly rated player, he now has time to recover and continue adapting to the club.
