Oskar Kordus, 20, dies in road accident

Oskar Kordus, a footballer in Poland’s fourth division, died in a serious road accident on Thursday 24 September at the age of 20. The circumstances of the tragedy give the case a dimension that seems more like a horror film than ordinary life.

According to reports in the Polish press, a deer that had previously been struck by another vehicle, whose driver was unharmed, was reportedly thrown with such force that it went through the windscreen of the player’s car as he was travelling in the opposite direction. The animal struck Oskar Kordus directly, causing him serious injuries.

Emergency services resuscitated him at the scene before he was transferred by helicopter to the hospital in Poznan.

His club, Kania Gostyn, expressed its grief in a message: “It is with immense sadness and deep disbelief that we learned of the death of our player, Oskar Kordus. On behalf of the entire Kania Gostyn community, we offer our sincerest condolences to Oskar’s family, loved ones and friends. In these extremely difficult moments, we share their pain and keep them in our thoughts and hearts. Rest in peace, Oskar.”
