Spain have moved ahead of Argentina in the race for Valentín Pezzolesi, one of the promising young players in the division. The Las Palmas full-back has been included in Paco Gallardo’s squad for the friendly against Mexico on Wednesday, September 30, at 8:30 p.m. at Estadio Cerro del Espino.
This call-up goes beyond a routine selection. The Argentine association had been tracking the UD player for several months through its representatives in Europe. Pezzolesi has Argentine roots and lived for one year and two months in Barracas, where his parents are from. The AFA wanted to move first in order to bring him into its youth teams, but the Spanish national side acted quickly to close off that option.
Pezzolesi began pre-season with the reserve team before gradually earning his place in Rubén de la Barrera’s side. He is now an undisputed member of the team and has played both at right-back and on the left. An injury crisis in the squad has also made him one of the regular choices for the Galician coach.
