Manchester City has been found guilty, according to reports carried by leading English media, on almost all charges concerning breaches of Premier League financial regulations.
The club has consistently denied the allegations. However, the independent commission tasked with deciding the case found it guilty on nearly every count for which suspicions had been raised. No sanction has been officially announced at this stage, and Manchester City is expected to challenge the decision on appeal.
In February 2023, the Premier League accused the club of failing to provide accurate financial information and proper details of payments to coaches and players between the 2009-2010 and 2017-2018 seasons. The allegations also concerned compliance with UEFA financial fair play rules between 2009 and 2018, as well as Premier League rules between the 2015-2016 and 2017-2018 seasons.
Manchester City was also accused of failing to cooperate with Premier League investigations conducted between December 2018 and February 2023.
Manchester City FC's position remains consistent with the statement issued by the club in February 2023. In that statement, the club said: “For eight years, the club has diligently respected due process, on the basis that the Premier League board and executive committee would conduct themselves as an independent, impartial and fair regulatory body, free from partisan influence.”
City has denied all charges from the outset and has hired some of the leading sports lawyers in the UK in an attempt to clear its name. Any potential sanction could range from a financial fine to a points deduction, relegation, or even the loss of titles.
