Women’s Supercup opens with the new Valencia Basket-Casademont Zaragoza classic

The Women’s Supercup launches the season with a new classic between Valencia Basket and Casademont Zaragoza. Two of the leading forces in Spanish women’s basketball in recent years meet on Saturday at 5:15 p.m. at the Jorge Garbajosa arena in Torrejón de Ardoz in the first semi-final. Helena Pueyo, a former Zaragoza player, adds an extra dimension to the contest; Innova.tsn Leganés will then face Hozono Global Jairis at 8 p.m.

The competition brings together Valencia Basket, Casademont Zaragoza, Hozono Global Jairis and hosts Innova.tsn Leganés for the first trophy of the campaign. Valencia and Zaragoza have recently faced each other in the battle for titles, notably in the last two Supercup finals. Valencia won in 2024 before Zaragoza prevailed last year.

The semi-final will also reprise the last two Liga Femenina Endesa finals. Valencia won those matchups and have four consecutive titles in that competition. With Javier Torralba beginning a new era on the bench, the Valencia club hopes to maintain that dominance.

Helena Pueyo, an international player and the top player of the last Supercup, will be at the centre of the game after moving from Zaragoza to Valencia this summer. Her first official match in Valencia colours will come against her former club. “It is emotional considering my last two seasons,” said the Mallorca-born player at her presentation with her new team. She will notably come up against Mariona Ortiz, with whom she shared the national-team dressing room at the Berlin tournament, which ended with a bronze medal. Building on the momentum of that success is also among the season’s objectives.

The second semi-final will pit hosts Innova.tsn Leganés against Hozono Global Jairis at 8 p.m. The two teams will seek to cause an upset in an open tournament, with the leading teams yet to reach their full potential. The final will be played on Sunday at 5 p.m., with every game broadcast on Teledeporte.
