Edin Dzeko will make his final appearance for Bosnia and Herzegovina against Sweden. The Nations League third-round match is scheduled for this Friday. Aged 40, the forward is ending his international career after 151 appearances for his country; his 73 goals make him its all-time leading scorer.
His legacy will remain closely linked with Bosnia. The country qualified for a World Cup for the first time in 2014, with Dzeko as a leading figure. At the most recent World Cup, Bosnia also qualified by eliminating Italy in the play-offs, with Dzeko as captain.
Regarded as a national hero, Dzeko is expected to receive a celebration in Zenica for his farewell. The previous day, a huge shirt bearing his name had already been hung on a building in Sarajevo.
On Instagram, Dzeko described the special place the national team has held in his life: «Nothing in my career compares with the pride I felt whenever I put on that shirt. Nothing.» He also said he wanted supporters to be there against Sweden, so they could share one more evening together in national colours.
