Zaragoza has confirmed Mariona Ortiz’s departure in December to join Project B, the new basketball venture associated with Novak Djokovic and Russell Westbrook. The new league is due to begin in January 2027 and will overlap with European competition. It is recruiting some of the world’s top players with salaries described as being in the millions.
Captain of Casademont Zaragoza, Ortiz will remain part of the team and continue playing under Carlos Cantero until her departure, set for December 30, 2026. The club says she informed it of her decision to end her contract early and join a new global basketball project.
The move also affects the Liga Femenina Endesa: Ortiz, a bronze medallist with the Spanish national team at the recent World Cup in Berlin, becomes the second Spanish player to leave the league for Project B, after Awa Fam.
Investors from well-known companies are backing the project alongside athletes such as Novak Djokovic and Russell Westbrook. Ortiz’s move is part of the new league’s recruitment of leading players, as its schedule will overlap with European competition.
