Tensions between the Premier League and the government have grown over the treatment of Manchester City. In England, an independent commission recognised 114 of the 115 breaches attributed to the club, relating to false sponsorship contracts whose origin was Abu Dhabi United Group and which were said to have inflated its finances. The Premier League is reportedly concerned by the government’s reaction to the decision.
On Wednesday, Andy Burnham, described as Prime Minister, said he was worried by the prospect of Manchester City’s owners being forced to sell after being found guilty. His comments were seen as a form of sympathy towards the club, despite the financial manipulation cited involving more than 900 million euros in fraudulent contracts. Government officials were also reportedly unhappy that they had not been notified in advance of the independent commission’s expected forceful ruling.
On Thursday, Downing Street clarified the Prime Minister’s position. It said that “the initial judgment is serious and there can be no suggestion that anyone is above the rules”. A spokesperson added: “If guilt is established, those responsible will have to face the appropriate consequences.” The response did not quell the controversy: Manchester City had already been found guilty by the independent commission after a 42-day hearing and the examination of 7,000 pages of testimony, following an eight-year Premier League investigation.
Other clubs say they have been disadvantaged and are preparing legal action. Burnham’s remarks also concerned them, as they appeared to show a degree of sympathy for Manchester City’s owners.
