Sinner has withdrawn from the Shanghai Masters after also pulling out of the China Open. Jannik Sinner is leaving the tournament as he deals with a knee problem. On Friday, the Italian announced that he would not defend his title at the China Open, having also missed the US Open because of the injury.
Sinner has not played since defending his Wimbledon title against Alexander Zverev in July. Last week, he said he was « not ready to compete » in Beijing and that his knee was still not fully right. He is disappointed to now miss the Shanghai Masters, which begins on October 7. « I always enjoy playing in front of the Shanghai fans and I’m very sorry that I won’t be able to do so next week, » he wrote on Instagram. He thanked them for their support and said he hoped to see them again next year.
The withdrawal comes as Zverev now leads Sinner by 800 points in the Race to Turin Ranking. The injury has also dealt a major blow to Sinner’s hopes of ending the 2026 season as world No. 1. Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz and Ben Shelton, all currently inside the top eight of that ranking, are set to feature at the Shanghai Masters.
