Marc Márquez turns down karting to focus on racing

“We’re here to fight for championships, not to mess around,” Marc Márquez said, explaining why he had not wanted to take part in a karting activity. He said he needed to put his preparation first rather than drive laps in a kart.

A fake Marc Márquez did appear, concealed by a helmet and dressed like the rider. Jorge Martín quickly realised it was a double. Márquez said he had asked to have ice before the “warm-up”, prompting someone in his group to suggest sending out a lookalike. He acknowledged that he had been told off, but said that at that moment he had to look after himself and be as well prepared as possible for the race.

Jorge Martín said he understood the decision. He explained that a blow to the back could have an impact, and that he moved aside at the first corner before staying with the slower riders. In doing so, he showed his support for Márquez.

Márquez acknowledged the appeal of putting on a show, but stressed his priorities: being ready to compete in the race. It is not the first time he has criticised this kind of event.
