Antonio Conte is waiting for an offer that meets specific conditions for his next coaching job: he wants to revive a major club in decline. Without naming Manchester United, the Italian described criteria interpreted as pointing to a small group of European clubs, including the Red Devils. Conte has previously been linked with the Manchester United coaching role.
He said a club with a rich history must aim to return to the fight for titles if it has fallen away from those goals. “You can honour that history in only one way: by having the ambition to bring that club […] back into contention for those objectives,” he said. He also stressed the need to give supporters, players and executives hope that they can win, adding that “history is made only by winning.” He is looking for clubs where pressure comes with an expectation to compete, rather than simply take part.
Juventus and Milan are also among the possible destinations; Conte coached Juventus from 2011 to 2014. Manchester United remain in a difficult period and have not won the Premier League since Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season, in 2012-2013. Conte’s comments come as Michael Carrick faces scrutiny after the club’s poor start to the season. Last season, the Red Devils had taken only five points from their first five matches, after finishing third under Carrick in the second half of the season. Conte suggested he could take a job during a season “if it is worth it.”
