Daniel Dubois expects he could move closer to a blockbuster fight with Tyson Fury after his rematch with Fabio Wardley. The WBO world champion believes victories in their next fights could set up an all-British heavyweight contest between the two.
Dubois faces Wardley again on October 17. In their first meeting, he got up after being knocked down twice early on before eventually forcing the stoppage. The Londoner believes Wardley should have been taken out of the fight sooner.
Fury, meanwhile, is due to face his long-time rival Anthony Joshua on December 11. Asked who he thought would win that showdown, Dubois replied: “I think Fury.” He also described the scale of a potential fight against him: “What a fight that would be. It would be like me and AJ all over again. That sort of magnitude. That’s what boxing’s about really. Frank Warren would love it, he’s got both of us. I’ve got to come through my next fight and anything’s possible.”
Dubois was quick to stress, however, that Wardley is his only immediate focus. “I’m not looking past Fabio. One fight at a time. I’m dedicating myself 100 per cent to this fight,” he said, describing his opponent as a competitor and a warrior. He believes Wardley’s camp took a gamble by allowing him to continue, but says he is “a different animal” who gets stronger as the rounds go on.
A fight with Fury therefore depends on what happens in the boxers’ next bouts. For Dubois, the first hurdle is the rematch with Wardley.
