Lionel Messi sent a final message to his admirers hours before his last international match for Argentina, against Benin, in the early hours of Wednesday at the Monumental. The Argentine legend spoke of the moment of farewell to the national team.
The Inter Miami star had decided to retire from international football after Argentina’s defeat to Spain in the 2026 final. It was also a difficult period marked by the death of his father, Jorge.
The video was posted by Messi’s sponsor on its X account. In his message ahead of the match against Benin, the player said: « The day we never wanted to see arrive has arrived. It is the saddest day of our lives. I leave in peace; I did everything I could. This shirt was my dream, my pride and my life. Thank you for all the love you have given me; I will miss you. »
Messi ended by thanking Argentina and kissing the shirt he will wear for his final match with the national team. His words give particular weight to a fixture billed as his last: they accompany the farewell of a player for whom the shirt represented a dream, a source of pride and an essential part of his life.
