Slovenia expose Scotland’s weaknesses as Sturm warns Pocognoli

Slovenia inflicted a defeat on Sébastien Pocognoli’s Scotland in the Nations League, making the result a clear warning for the manager. After taking four points from their first three matches in the competition, Scotland suffered a setback defined by the poor quality of their performance. They were comprehensively outplayed by a Slovenian side described as functional rather than spectacular. The contrast was striking: Slovenia found Scotland far too easy to play against.

The evening had begun with a presentation to Andy Robertson, who reached 100 caps during Scotland’s win in North Macedonia on Saturday. Gordon Strachan and Alex McLeish, Robertson’s first two Scotland managers, joined Steve Clarke on the Hampden pitch. Clarke’s return to the national stadium carried particular resonance after he left the Scotland job following failings at the World Cup.

Scotland are in a period of transition following Clarke’s departure. His team had faced widespread criticism for lacking ambition; Pocognoli now has to maintain decent results while offering a different style of football. The defeat by Slovenia makes that dual task harder, and November looks significant for him.

On the pitch, Scotland looked ragged and uncertain, while Slovenia were comfortable both in defence and when moving forward. The stadium, which should be an asset for Scotland, was eerily quiet. Ryan Christie did lift the mood, turning the ball home from close range. But Danijel Sturm had already shown the threat he posed, disrupting Scotland’s three-man defence as he supplied Zan Vipotnik.

Slovenia eventually equalised 11 minutes after half-time, and the goal was deserved. The move began with a Scotland throw-in, after possession was conceded cheaply. In the previous match, Robertson had also demonstrated his value, stopping Zan Vipotnik from equalising before the break with a sliding block. For Pocognoli, the display against Slovenia underlined the scale of the task ahead.
