Hernández Hernández to referee Barcelona-Real Madrid Clasico

Barcelona will face Real Madrid on 25 October in the 10th round of La Liga. Hernández Hernández is preparing to referee the Clasico, one of the season’s major fixtures. It would be his second consecutive appointment for the contest, Marca reports. Radio Marca has also reported that La Liga’s refereeing committee chose the Spanish official.

The match is expected to be the sixth Clasico of his refereeing career, following five games between the teams that he has already officiated. His first came in the 2015-2016 season, when Real Madrid won 2-1 in the 31st round. Barcelona prevailed 3-2 in the 33rd round of the 2016-2017 season, in another match he refereed. A further Clasico under his watch ended goalless in the 2019-2020 season.

Last season, Hernández Hernández took charge of the return fixture between the rivals. Barcelona won 2-0, a result that secured the Liga title for the Blaugrana. The appointment comes after more than five years in which the referee had not officiated one of the teams’ major encounters. The Clasico before that, in 2019, had also ended goalless between Barcelona and Real Madrid.
