The guilty verdict against Manchester City has prompted reactions from managers, but the process is ongoing and the club has appealed. The recurring message is one of waiting: uncertainty, described as harmful to those involved, leaves the final consequences unknown.
Andoni Iraola, identified as Liverpool’s manager, has called for the case to be dealt with swiftly. Michael Carrick, meanwhile, says the verdict has affected him personally. He believes that a medal awarded retrospectively would not make up for the powerful emotions tied to moments of glory that he considers lost because of Manchester City’s breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules.
Carrick recalled a scene at Sunderland: he and his United teammates stood solemnly on the touchline as City celebrated. Manchester City was found guilty of breaching financial rules over a nine-year period, from 2009 to 2018. The club continues to deny wrongdoing and has appealed the verdict.
“The emotion, the feeling about winning, a lot of it is in the moment,” Carrick said. He also said the case had affected him personally in different ways. For him, part of sport’s value lies in the journey towards a trophy and the intensity of its conclusion: a team may win or lose, but the emotion of that moment cannot be recovered later. A reward handed out afterwards could not recreate what was experienced—or missed—on the pitch.
Iraola, for his part, said he did not know how the process would end. He called for patience while arguing that a swift resolution was essential for everyone’s benefit. He also said he wanted to focus his efforts on Liverpool and on making his team better, adding that his view of the case would not be valid because he had neither spent as much time on it nor studied the material as extensively as the commission.
Vincent Kompany struck a different tone about his years at City. He said he was very proud of what he had achieved there and everything the team accomplished on the pitch. His City tenure ran from 2008 through 2019, yielding four Premier League titles and several domestic cups for the man who now manages Bayern Munich. He also noted that, as a player, he was not part of matters off the pitch; now, as Bayern Munich’s manager, he said he was chiefly occupied with preparing for the upcoming matches.
Mikel Arteta stressed the need to respect the process and declined to comment further on a case that, he said, remained unresolved after the appeal. He also said a clearer view of the impact on the Premier League’s reputation would be possible once the proceedings had concluded. For now, the managers’ reactions point above all to the human cost of the wait: for players and supporters, the emotion of a win belongs to the moment it happens.
