Spain defeated Portugal 2-1 on Friday in the semi-final of the championship being held in Asunción, Paraguay. The Spanish side, seeking a ninth world title and its second consecutive crown, secured a place in the final against Portugal, the reigning European runners-up.
Sara Roces extended Spain’s advantage, but her team could not put the match beyond reach. Portugal stayed in contention thanks to goalkeeper Sandra Coelho’s saves. She stopped a shot to prolong Portugal’s resistance, after Spain had converted all of its earlier penalty attempts in the championship.
Portugal then withdrew its goalkeeper in an effort to equalise with an extra player on the court. Spain held firm in the closing moments to seal its place in the final.
The team led by Sergi Macià will face Argentina or Italy on Saturday. It will aim to claim a ninth world crown and defend the title it won at the previous edition.
