Tenerife was where Girona broke its promotion-playoff curse. After a succession of unsuccessful attempts, Míchel’s side won 1-3 there. The club will visit Tenerife on Monday to close another Segunda División round, returning to a stadium associated with one of its happiest memories: the Heliodoro Rodríguez López.
The last time Girona played there, it went home with promotion to Primera División. The club was returning to the top flight after three seasons in Segunda, leaving behind some of the most painful chapters in its recent history. Tenerife was where that burden lifted.
Four years later, Girona is back in the second division. Míchel is no longer in the dugout and the squad has changed profoundly, but the aim is once again to reclaim a place among the best as soon as possible. The return to the Heliodoro Rodríguez López brings back a powerful memory, but sentiment will earn no favours on the pitch: Tenerife will not give anything away for that reason.
