Lise Klaveness, president of the Norwegian Football Federation, has been discussed as a possible candidate in efforts to contest the FIFA presidency. The parties involved have contacted her, but she is not currently considering entering the race.
An unusual contest is taking shape around the leadership of world football’s governing body. Figures in European football are looking for someone who could unite the opposition to Gianni Infantino, who is seeking another term. The election is scheduled for March next year in Rabat.
The Union of European Football Associations has sought a figure able to bring the opposition together, according to reports carried by French media. Michele Kang, owner of Olympique Lyonnais and a prominent name in women’s football, was also approached but declined to take on the challenge.
The Norwegian Federation had stepped up its criticism of Infantino last August, calling for his resignation before submitting a petition to FIFA’s internal bodies over several controversial matters. Despite those efforts, Infantino’s opponents are still struggling to find someone with the experience and standing to attract support and offer a credible alternative. UEFA is continuing its search.
