Michael Carrick must share responsibility for Man Utd’s struggles with his players. Several questions were put to him about his team’s performance after Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Spurs, as his margin for error shrinks week by week.
This season, Manchester United are enduring their worst start to a league campaign in 40 years. Carrick acknowledged his side’s shortcomings: « We couldn’t find a way to get ourselves into the game. With the ball, without the ball, we were off it. »
Gary Neville said he thought the fans would stay behind the project, but also observed that the boos « are turning quite quickly ». He added: « I don’t think the boos are against Michael Carrick for one minute. » United had turned to a man known for his composure when they needed a calm voice at the beginning of the year. But the team that has started this season seems a long way from that version of Manchester United.
Spurs repeatedly found space, while gaps opened up in United’s defence in a variety of ways. Spurs’ quick passing combinations also exposed problems that cannot be fixed by one midfielder alone. Five of United’s starters, described as lacking effort, did not leave for international duty during the break. Carrick summed up the challenge: « If we’re ahead in the game, we have to see it out. » Roberto De Zerbi, the opposing manager, concluded: « Football is character. » United must find some, or risk being overwhelmed by the competition.
