Jordan Henderson scored twice for Chelsea in a 5-1 victory over Bournemouth on his home debut for the club. The midfielder explained how Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers had let him take the free-kick that completed his brace. He opened the scoring inside two minutes, then set up Rogers for Chelsea’s second goal. João Pedro also scored twice.

“It was my home debut, so it was a big day for me,” Henderson said. Returning after an injury during the summer, he said he was pleased to play at Stamford Bridge for the first time. “It had been a while since my injury in the summer, so it was nice to be here and play.”

Henderson said the free-kick followed a week of specialist practice at Cobham with coach Austin MacPhee. The work gave him the confidence to step up, even though Palmer and Rogers were also keen to take it. “Austin said, ‘Forget it, that’s what we’re doing’,” he recalled. “Morgs wasn’t too happy, but when we got there he said, ‘Go on then.’”

Palmer even wanted to know which corner Henderson would celebrate in if he scored. “Cole said, ‘Which corner are we celebrating in when you score?’ So I said they wanted the right, then put it in, thankfully,” the midfielder continued. He was grateful to Cole and Morgs for letting him take the kick: “It was nice because it was something we worked on in training and executed really well.”

Beyond the goals, Henderson highlighted Chelsea’s consistency and defensive focus, which he saw as the foundation of the attacking display. “We started both halves really well, which is important, and got some good goals,” he said, adding that maintaining that level throughout the match was what mattered most. He also praised the attacking players’ work without the ball, including Rogers, Palmer and João Pedro. “When we win it back, they’re so good on the transition. With their skill, pace and power, they can hurt any team and they’re clinical in front of goal.”

The occasion carried particular significance for Henderson as he worked his way back after his summer injury. His teammates stepped aside for the free-kick, and he made the opportunity count with the goal that completed his brace.
