Deco turns an almost impossible summer into a shrewd recruitment success

Deco faced a difficult assignment this summer: despite financial fair play constraints, he had to replace the goals of Lewandowski, Torres and Rashford without major spending, while also improving the possession game around Rodri. Three months on, the sporting director can point to deals regarded as among the shrewdest of the club’s recent era. The summary is simple: achieving a great deal with very little.

Gordon, Gabriel Jesus and Adeyemi embody that approach. Rather than established superstars, they are described as imaginative answers to the team’s needs. Barça average more than four goals per match, a sign of an attack that is collective and difficult to predict. Gabriel Jesus, meanwhile, had seemed at risk of drifting away from the elite after losing prominence at Arsenal.

Deco’s work goes beyond choosing names. He has built a deep squad, with options in every line, allowing Flick to rotate, foster competition and manage the starters over a long season. That depth also gives Barça the means to remain a threat: every Madrid setback could open up a gap that would be difficult to close. Deco has won his summer; now it is up to the team to conquer everything.
