Brian Brobbey is expected back at Sunderland soon after a hamstring injury initially raised fears of a more serious problem. The 24-year-old forward was forced off in the first half of the Netherlands’ Nations League match against Germany approximately two weeks ago. He returned to England immediately to begin his rehabilitation with Sunderland.
Brobbey was unavailable for Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Brighton & Hove Albion. Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris nevertheless expects to have him back before long. The club will be careful as the forward works towards a return. With a demanding run of fixtures ahead, Sunderland will want him fully fit before bringing him back into the side. The club will monitor his progress over the coming days, hoping to have him available as the Premier League schedule intensifies.
Le Bris said the first footage had briefly caused concern. “After seeing the footage, we did briefly think it might be a serious injury, but Brobbey said straight after the match that it was nothing major,” he said. The player also told him he had experienced the injury before and reassured the club that it was not serious. “We are taking no risks with him, but it certainly will not take long,” the manager added.
Sunderland signed Brobbey from Ajax in the summer of 2025 for a reported €20 million. He quickly became an important part of the attack and has scored three goals in five Premier League appearances this season, underlining the value of his return to Le Bris’s side.
