Virgil van Dijk does not want to comment now on the accusations involving Manchester City. After Liverpool’s 3-0 defeat at Anfield on Sunday, the Reds captain said he would speak at the appropriate time, while the case remains ongoing.
“The only thing I can say, because the case is still ongoing, is that I have really enjoyed this competition,” he said. He added that it was not his place to discuss what happened off the pitch while the proceedings continue. Van Dijk said he would share his opinion once the case had been finally settled: “For now, let’s wait and see.”
Manchester City secured a 3-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield in its first match since being found guilty of breaching the Premier League’s financial rules. Ryan Gravenberch was sent off after receiving a second yellow card. Erling Haaland then opened the scoring three minutes after the dismissal, before Jérémy Doku extended the lead with a curling shot. Rayan Cherki added the third goal in the 78th minute.
Van Dijk also assessed the match. He felt Liverpool had made a good start and shown enthusiasm, while acknowledging that the team could have made better use of its counter-attacking opportunities. In his view, the dismissal changed the course of the second half: Liverpool were down to ten men and conceded soon afterwards, making the task especially difficult.
The captain also said he had enjoyed playing at Anfield, where he believes the atmosphere remains good. He said he was ready to compete and felt Liverpool had shown that, particularly in the first half. On the case involving Manchester City, his position remains clear: he will wait until it is finally resolved before giving his view.
