Sporting de Gijón beat Cádiz 0-1 at the JP Financial stadium on Sunday, scoring in the 87th minute. The victory puts the Gijón side in the promotion places for the Primera División, while Cádiz drop back into the relegation zone.
The Liga Hypermotion matchday 9 fixture was played in front of 15,900 spectators. Cádiz looked to control possession and play with energy in the first half, as they had in their 4-0 win over Leganés the previous week. But the Asturian setup unsettled Albert Celades’ side, who lacked pace in their build-up and did not show the same assurance as against Leganés.
From around the midpoint of the first half, Cádiz moved the ball faster and forced Sporting to retreat. In the closing stages, the home side tried to turn its dominance into chances, after creating danger only sporadically up to that point. It could not do so. Sporting, meanwhile, remained cautious and defensively compact before finding the breakthrough late in the match.
