“We are 100% guilty; Guardiola surely knew something” captures the questions surrounding Manchester City after it was found guilty of 114 breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules. In its first match after the verdict, the club won 0-3 at Anfield, in front of what the match account described as a particularly demanding crowd. The result on the pitch was emphatic, while the possible disciplinary consequences remained a source of concern among supporters.
Outside Anfield, local banners and scarves were directed against Manchester City, Liverpool’s sporting rival over the past decade. Some signs paired the word “cheats” with images of major signings now under suspicion, while supporters called for exemplary punishment. In the stands, some fans urged that the title be taken away, that the club be relegated to the second division and sent back down each time it earned promotion. Others said the club had brought shame on English football.
City supporters were divided too. One young fan said he was certain the club was guilty, while his companion hoped for a lesser penalty, such as a summer without signings. Another supporter expected a very severe punishment and accused the club’s ownership of cheating. Asked about Pep Guardiola, he said he believed the coach knew what was coming and had decided to leave that summer; he still described him as one of Manchester City’s greatest legends.
The club’s fans accept the guilt of owners they adore, while debating what punishment will follow. Despite the accusations, supporters again sang their devotion to Khaldoon Al Mubarak on the journey home after the 0-3 win. For Enzo Maresca’s team, this victory may prove to be the only favourable verdict for a long time.
