Paul Pogba hopes Manchester United can reclaim two titles if Manchester City are docked points. Asked about the club’s situation, after it was found guilty of 114 breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules, the former United midfielder answered jokingly. The Premier League is awaiting sanctions against Manchester City.

“I have nothing to say, to be honest. I just hope it doesn’t affect the Premier League and that we can get two titles back,” Pogba said with a smile in the paddock at the Singapore Grand Prix this weekend.

The 2012 and 2018 titles could be returned to Manchester United. Across the seven seasons he spent with the Red Devils, Pogba could therefore be crowned English champion twice if Manchester City were stripped of its titles.

The breaches found involved financial information submitted to the League and deemed misleading, totalling one billion euros over the period from 2009 to 2018. Manchester City has appealed the decision made by an independent commission appointed by the Premier League. The club disputes the decision: “The club firmly believes that this opinion is, in several respects, clearly flawed in law, principle and fact, and is unfounded,” the Cityzens said.

The issue reaches back to seasons when Manchester United finished level on points with its rival, and later behind it. During his first spell at Manchester United, in 2011 and 2012, the team finished on 89 points, level with the Skyblues. Five years later, after Pogba returned to Manchester United, the Red Devils again finished runners-up to their Manchester rival.
