Coventry claimed a long-awaited home victory against Newcastle, with Stephen Mfuni putting the finishing touch on a convincing win. It was Coventry’s second successive victory and lifted the club out of the relegation zone. Newcastle dominated for long spells and created several clear chances, but could not prevent a heavy defeat. A win would have taken them into fourth place in the Premier League.
Jack Rudoni put Coventry ahead from the penalty spot in the sixth minute. The goal carried added significance: John Hartson had been the last player to score at home for the club in the Premier League, 25 years earlier. The move began with Ephron Mason-Clark chasing a pass from Brandon Thomas-Asante. Lukas Hornicek failed to deal with the ball cleanly, and Sidiki Cherif went down after contact with the Newcastle goalkeeper, prompting appeals for a penalty.
Newcastle found plenty of space and possession when attacking, but Coventry remained a major threat on the counter. Bobby Thomas twice denied Newcastle before the break. Cherif then found the net: after Malick Thiaw headed away a long throw, Cherif controlled the ball and struck. He had another chance to extend the lead, while Botman had missed his attempt to deal with a Thomas-Asante cross. Thomas-Asante also hit the post before Mfuni drove into the penalty area and finished left-footed.
Frank Lampard’s decision to keep players forward, even after Sven Botman had cut Newcastle’s deficit to 2-1 with 20 minutes remaining, reflected the balance of risk and reward sought by the manager. Coventry was particularly dangerous in transition. The club spent £100m in the summer; whether those recruits have enough quality to help the team stay up remains to be seen, but there is depth in the squad. Cherif made his first Premier League start since joining from Fenerbache, stepping in during Taiwo Awoniyi’s absence through a three-match suspension.
After scoring, Coventry’s attacking midfielder also offered a gesture of solidarity, lifting his shirt to reveal the message “Get well soon Nan”. The win strengthens the team’s recent momentum, though questions remain over whether it can sustain that form.
