Matthias Jaissle apologised to Newcastle’s travelling supporters after the 4-1 defeat at Coventry. Jamie Carragher, meanwhile, said the team had been “beaten up” away from home once again. Newcastle have now lost twice in three matches, following an unbeaten opening five games across all competitions. They sit 11th in the Premier League.

The scoreline did not tell the whole story of Newcastle’s attacking output: they had 19 shots, created three big chances and registered more than twice as many touches in the opposition box as Coventry. But the home side’s resilience proved decisive. Coventry dug in after taking an early lead; Sven Botman’s superb strike made it 2-1 and offered Newcastle a glimmer of hope, but the hosts went on to win.

It was Coventry’s first home win in the Premier League for more than 9,000 days. Three excellent finishes and an early penalty helped secure it. Newcastle faced a side described as the Premier League’s second-highest xG overperformers at the CBS Arena. Matias Fernandez-Pardo also had an effort cleared off the line after rounding Carl Rushworth, while Newcastle were punished for too many of their own mistakes.

“We’re frustrated. It’s a feeling you don’t want to have on a Monday evening after a match where you should win,” Jaissle said. He added: “We can only apologise to the fans who came here; they deserve a different result.” The manager acknowledged that his side needed to defend better and take its chances: “The opportunities were there, but the desire and hunger to finish the attacks was missing.”

Carragher also questioned Newcastle’s lack of physicality. He pointed out that the team had conceded eight goals across away games at Leeds and Coventry, adding that this had to stop quickly. He also discussed the decision to play with two strikers, suggesting that an extra midfielder could help a team he described as young and less physically powerful than many Premier League sides. Newcastle have conceded at least four goals in consecutive league away games for the first time since December 2012.
