Coventry thrashed Newcastle 4-1 at home in the Premier League, making it two consecutive wins and moving out of the relegation zone. It was also the team’s first home victory of the season for Frank Lampard’s side. Jack Rudoni, Sidiki Cherif, Ellis Simms and Stephen Mfuni scored for the Sky Blues.

Newcastle’s evening got off to a poor start at the CBS Arena when goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek brought down Cherif, allowing Rudoni to convert a penalty in the sixth minute. Newcastle responded, but Matias Fernandez-Pardo missed two clear chances. On one of them, Bobby Thomas raced back to clear off the line after the forward had rounded the goalkeeper.

Cherif doubled the lead in the 48th minute with a powerful, low strike from outside the box. The 19-year-old had scored his first goal for the club. Sven Botman gave Newcastle hope with a superb long-range effort that made it 2-1 in the 70th minute. Simms restored Coventry’s two-goal cushion 11 minutes later with a deflected strike. Mfuni then made it four in the 86th minute, scoring his first senior goal.

The goals from Rudoni, Cherif, Simms and Mfuni secured Coventry’s first home win of the season. For Newcastle, the defeat was a second consecutive 4-1 loss away from home.
