Viking has made an early move against Bayern Munich, in an apparent attempt to deprive the German club of sleep before their Champions League match. Bayern travels to face the Norwegian side on matchday two, seeking a positive result after a recent disappointing draw in the German league. The Bavarian team is relying on the strength and solidity of its players.
Knowing Bayern’s strength may have prompted some Viking supporters to try to unsettle the visitors. Several people attempted to disrupt the players’ sleep. German magazine Sport Bild reported that fireworks were set off after midnight outside the hotel where the Bavarian team was staying. The fireworks reportedly reached the hotel’s upper floors. Sport Bild also said police did not go to the scene, allowing those responsible to continue without interruption.
The magazine believes Viking supporters may have been involved. The incident’s effect on Bayern’s players remains unclear: it has not been established whether they were woken or affected. Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer described a similar episode by saying: “We all heard them, and we all woke up.”
Last year, before hosting Feyenoord Rotterdam, Bayern had experienced a similar scene: Feyenoord supporters set off a large number of fireworks at night outside the German team’s accommodation. Last April, fireworks were also reported outside the hotel of a Spanish team in Munich shortly before an important match against Bayern, according to German website Mopo.
