Inter have written a dark page in their European history by suffering a fourth consecutive defeat in the European Cup or Champions League. Opta noted that this is a first for the club: “Inter have lost their fourth consecutive European Cup/Champions League match for the first time in their history.”

The run has stretched across two seasons. Inter lost twice to Bodø/Glimt in the knockout phase last season. This season, their campaign began with a defeat to Real Madrid, followed by another loss against Club Brugge.

That latest setback also affected the league-phase standings. Inter dropped to 28th in a competition involving 36 teams. Club Brugge, meanwhile, climbed to 18th after securing their first three points in the continental competition this season. The result was one of the season’s biggest surprises and added to the significance of Inter’s losing run.
