The Champions League match between Atlético de Madrid and Manchester United, played on Tuesday, October 13, featured an animated duel between Cristian Romero and Lisandro Martínez at the Metropolitano. Friends and national-team teammates, the two defenders repeatedly got under each other’s skin on the pitch.
As the match went on, previously overlooked footage brought their playful exchanges to light, reflecting the strong relationship between the players. One of the most talked-about moments came at a Manchester United corner: Lisandro Martínez shoved Cuti Romero as he tried to get into position for a header, prompting several more pushes between them.
The exchange continued after the match. Accompanied by Julián Álvarez and Giuliano Simeone, Romero approached Martínez, who appeared deeply frustrated by the Red Devils’ defeat. The Argentine defender then seemed to make a teasing remark, which did not appear to go down well with the Manchester United player. From on-field tussles to the post-match jibe, the encounter gave this duel between friends an extra edge.
