FIFA plans to inject more than $6 billion into the development of football worldwide, according to reported plans. More than $3.5 billion is expected to come directly from its financial reserves to support development programmes and continental federations. The plan aims to broaden support for football in different regions of the world.
The plans are linked to expected growth in FIFA’s revenue. The expansion of the men’s Cup to 48 national teams, up from 32, is expected to increase commercial and marketing income as well as broadcasting rights revenue. Those additional resources could then be directed towards projects to develop the game.
For the next cycle, FIFA also plans to increase funding for national and continental federations compared with previous programmes. The approach reflects its aim of reinvesting football revenues in the development of the game around the world.
