Real Madrid visit Roma on Wednesday evening in the second matchday of the Champions League league phase. The numbers point to an advantage for the visitors, although their opponents also have a strong home record in the competition.
In their 12 previous meetings, Real Madrid have won eight times, compared with three victories for Roma and one draw, according to UEFA statistics. Madrid’s record against Italian clubs is also impressive: they have won 20 of their last 22 matches against them, with two defeats.
There has, however, been a setback in Real Madrid’s campaign: they began their season with a defeat to Inter Milan. They will now look to get back to winning ways against Roma.
The challenge in the Italian capital is far from straightforward. Roma have won eight of their last nine home matches in the Champions League, losing once. That makes for an intriguing contrast: Real Madrid arrive with a strong record against Italian opposition, while Roma can point to an impressive run on home soil.
