Juventus beat Lecce 2-0 in the Italian championship on matchday eight. The win came after a heavy 3-0 home defeat to Lazio and a 2-2 draw with Stade Rennais in the Europa League. Juventus also had to manage a lengthy absence list: only 17 outfield players were available, with injuries affecting, among others, Nico González, Zeki Çelik, Kenan Yıldız, Francisco Conceição, Manuel Locatelli, Khéphren Thuram, Jeff Ekhator and Kamill Grabara.
Douglas Luiz was central to the victory, scoring one goal and setting up another. Juventus had chances to extend their advantage earlier: Randal Kolo Muani first shot wide after a pass from Teun Koopmeiners, then failed to make the most of another delivery from Douglas Luiz. Juventus nevertheless finished with the win and a clean sheet.
Lecce tried to get back into the game early in the second half. Omar Ngom’s weak effort went straight to Vicario, before Federico Gatti diverted Youssef Maleh’s dangerous attempt behind for a corner. Tiago Gabriel was injured and left the pitch; Bako Esteban then tested Vicario with an attempted backheel from a cross on the right. In the closing moments, Kialonda Gaspar was sent off after strongly disputing a referee’s decision. Lecce ended the match with ten men.
In the Serie A table, Juventus are seventh on 14 points, while Lecce are 12th on 9, leaving five points between them. After eight matches, Juventus have four wins, two draws and two defeats, with 11 goals scored and 8 conceded. Lecce have three wins and five defeats, with no draws, and have scored 9 goals while conceding 14. Across their last five league matches, both teams have won twice; Juventus have also drawn once and lost twice, while Lecce have lost three times.
The result was Juventus’ ninth win in their recent meetings with Lecce. Lecce’s last victory over Juventus came in February 2011, by 2-0; the subsequent meetings brought four 1-1 draws and nine Lecce defeats.
