“Don’t get me wrong”: after Manchester City’s 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa in the Premier League, Erling Haaland explained what he believes his team needs to improve. The match was played on Saturday evening at Villa Park in the eighth round. The result showed a different side to a team accustomed to imposing its dominance on opponents, as the account of the match put it.

Haaland first focused on how City should use the wings. “We need to prepare the wings, then the wide players need to know when to make their runs and when to keep the ball,” he said. His point was not limited to the final action: he also called for better coordination from the wide players, balancing runs with retaining possession.

The striker nevertheless felt City had produced some good passages and created opportunities. He pointed to a chance for Gvardiol in the second half and his own attempts with his head. Before the break, Ndiaye struck a ball that hit the post. Those moments did not prevent the defeat, and Haaland rejected bad luck as the explanation: “We need to be more precise and put the ball in the back of the net; that’s what you have to do in football matches.”

The standings offer a further snapshot of Aston Villa after eight rounds. The club were ninth on 11 points, with 3 wins and 2 draws alongside 3 defeats. They had scored 9 goals and conceded 12. Across their five most recent Premier League matches, Aston Villa had won three, drawn one and lost one.

Haaland’s assessment therefore identified two areas for City: organise their play on the wings more effectively, then show greater accuracy in front of goal. After this defeat, his comments put finishing among the key improvements required at Manchester City.
