Ceuta have decided to part ways with coach José Juan Romero following a 3-0 defeat at Córdoba. The club announced the decision in a statement published close to midnight, after a league start featuring one win, two draws and ten defeats.

The loss at Córdoba leaves Ceuta bottom with five points after 13 rounds of LaLiga Hypermotion. Córdoba, meanwhile, claimed its third win in its last four matches. Ceuta missed several chances and paid for its lack of goals, according to the match report.

The club acknowledged how difficult the decision was, pointing to Romero’s importance to the team and the city. “This is an especially difficult and painful decision because of everything José Juan represents for our organisation and for the city of Ceuta,” it said. The statement also recalled the moments they shared and obstacles they overcame, adding that their history would always remain part of the club.

Ceuta also emphasised its personal bond with its now former coach. “José Juan Romero is not just another person to pass through our dugout; he is someone greatly loved, who has felt and defended this badge like few others,” the club said, adding that Romero would continue to have “the affection, respect and recognition” of the AD Ceuta FC family.

In explaining the decision, the club cited the sporting situation and results. “Football also demands difficult decisions,” it said, adding that the results “lead us to understand that a change of direction is necessary to turn the team’s momentum around.” Ceuta said the move was made in the club’s interests, while expressing gratitude to Romero for his work, commitment and dedication.

Romero’s time at Ceuta had included two promotions. In 2020-2021, he joined the club and helped it rise from Tercera RFEF to Segunda RFEF. After a spell at Eldense, he returned in 2024-2025 and helped Ceuta earn promotion from Primera RFEF to LaLiga.
