A knee issue has forced Jannik Sinner to withdraw from the China Open. The world number one will not defend his Beijing title, with the tournament running from Wednesday to 6 October.
He also missed the US Open in August because of the injury. The Italian has not played competitively since beating Alexander Zverev in the Wimbledon final.
In a video posted on X, Sinner sent his “warmest greetings to the Chinese fans”. He explained that his knee was not where he wanted it to be and that he was not yet ready to compete. “I’m very disappointed that I cannot defend my title this year,” he added.
Sinner won the China Open in 2023 and 2025. Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic are among the other leading names still expected in Beijing.
