Jesse Marsch says « everyone knew » that Manchester City was not complying with the Premier League’s financial rules, long before the verdict. The former Leeds coach is calling for a severe punishment and says the club should be relegated. An independent commission found Manchester City guilty on 114 of the 115 charges; the club could therefore be relegated from the Premier League as a sanction.
Marsch also recalled his reaction when the club spoke about the situation: « Are you kidding me? Is this a joke? » Manchester City, for its part, has consistently defended its innocence and appealed, a move that is expected to prolong the process considerably. The club summed up its position this way: « We are innocent. »
The debate also resonates with Marsch’s own record. In 2022-23, he coached Leeds during its relegation from the Premier League. In 2023, Leeds finished below Everton and Nottingham Forest, both of which later had points deducted for breaching the competition’s financial rules. Marsch currently manages Canada’s national team. The coach has also discussed the announcement that City had signed Erling Haaland for more than 61 million euros, recalling that his reaction was: « Yes, sure! »
