Premier League coaches addressed the Manchester City case ahead of the next round of matches, during press conferences on Friday. Their reactions differ as proceedings continue and questions remain over the outcome and possible consequences for the competition. The central message was that “justice demands punishment for anyone found guilty of cheating.”
The comments ranged from caution while awaiting a final decision to criticism of the length of the process, with some calling for a swift ruling. The debate follows reports that Manchester City had been found guilty in relation to 115 alleged financial breaches spanning a period of nine seasons. Judicial proceedings connected to the case are nevertheless still ongoing.
David Moyes questioned how some cases could remain unresolved for nearly 10 years, while clubs had faced sanctions more quickly. In the 2023-2024 season, Everton were deducted eight points for breaches of profitability and sustainability rules. Moyes also praised Manchester City’s contribution on the pitch in the Premier League, saying its playing style, along with the coaches and players who have been part of it, had helped raise the league’s standard.
Iraola, meanwhile, said uncertainty served nobody and urged patience until the proceedings conclude. He added that the challenge of the upcoming match against Manchester City would keep his players focused on the pitch rather than the noise surrounding the case.
The responses show that the issues extend beyond the legal proceedings themselves: their duration, the fairness of how cases are handled and the competition’s reputation are also at stake.
