Toto Wolff says strict transparency and equal treatment are essential to keeping Mercedes F1 united. With Andrea Kimi Antonelli rapidly closing in on the 2026 drivers’ title and George Russell contending with repeated grid penalties, the team principal says he has built a garage culture designed to prevent pressure from driving the team apart.

The approach stems from a conversation with four-time world champion Alain Prost about his rivalry with Ayrton Senna at McLaren. Early in his Formula 1 career, while working at Williams, Wolff asked Prost how the relationship between the two drivers had deteriorated so badly. “I had watched the whole thing on television and asked him, almost naively, how it had escalated between the two of you,” Wolff recalled, saying he had not understood the dynamics between them at the time.

Prost reportedly told him that the central problem was a lack of clarity over equal status. “The problem was that you never knew whether you were the one being favoured,” Wolff recounted. He also described Prost’s sense that favouritism could shift over the years, creating mistrust and concern that a rival might receive an advantage.

Wolff believes drivers, shaped from a young age by having to rely on themselves in highly pressured junior categories, need a secure, balanced psychological environment without favouritism. “At the end of the day, drivers are little traumatised eight-year-olds who were put in a go-kart,” he said. He described their journey from early races to Formula 1, followed by the instruction to work for the team. “You need to feel emotionally protected by the team,” he stressed. Without that balance and transparency, he warned, a driver can lose confidence.

To avoid the mistrust that marked the Prost-Senna relationship, Wolff says he established a rule of honesty and equality in the Mercedes garage. If the team ever officially favoured Antonelli over Russell in pursuit of the 2026 title, he said he would not conceal it behind vague radio messages. “I learned from that that I could never do it that way: I had to be transparent,” he declared. He said any team orders would be made clear, and that disagreements could be discussed. His aim is for both drivers to know where they stand within the team, keeping Mercedes united through the season’s final rounds.
