María Vicente will not continue training with Ramón Cid and is moving to England to join a combined-events group. Spain’s national heptathlon record-holder is leaving San Sebastián after more than six years there, bringing an important chapter of her career to a close.
In a video posted on social media, the athlete said goodbye to her group in affectionate terms. “Here I found a training group that became my family, and a coach who became one of the pillars of my life,” she said. She described those six years as a period of rebuilding, speaking of “a new life and a new me” and of the successes, setbacks and fresh starts along the way.
Vicente also said that, despite how happy she had been in San Sebastián, she felt it was time to begin a new stage. Ramón Cid, who has coached her in recent years, said the change had been discussed for a long time and that this was the right moment: he believes she is at an ideal stage of maturity.
Her departure therefore ends her time with Cid’s group and begins a new training chapter in England.
