Freiburg moved to the top of the German league with a 2-1 win over Schalke on Sunday, despite playing the closing stages with 10 men. The result extends the best start to a league campaign in the club’s history: Freiburg had collected 10 points from its first four matches before improving that tally against Schalke.
The match shifted at the 64th minute, when Yuito Suzuki was sent off after receiving a second caution. Freiburg had to continue with 10 players, but Schalke could not make its numerical advantage count and lacked the attacking efficiency to change the score.
Instead, Freiburg found the decisive breakthrough. Five minutes before the end of regular time, Goto rose to meet a cross with a header and scored the winning goal, securing three valuable points for his team. The victory puts Freiburg at the top of the standings, while Schalke leave without turning their numerical advantage into a result.
