“Well, then, it’s war…” was RMTV’s response to Vinicius’s suspension. The Brazilian received a four-match ban after being sent off against Villarreal at the Bernabéu. The sanction had just been confirmed when the club’s official channel spoke out, during the build-up to Roma-Real Madrid.

“Now, with Vinicius, well, it’s war,” the speaker began. RMTV also took aim at the media, accusing “many of them” of being subsidised by Tebas and reviving an earlier demand by Florentino Pérez about where that support goes and how much it amounts to.

In an ironic tone, presenters asked whether the media receiving financial support were the same ones who repeatedly say “Madrid play badly”, while overlooking what they described as an institutional campaign against the team. They concluded: “This is what this team has to fight against in the Spanish competition… Over there, it’s a different story.”

RMTV contrasted that treatment with what it said happens in Europe, arguing that fouls against Vinicius are different there and are punished when they occur. Under UEFA, the channel added, “there are no trends”. It also made light of continental rules preventing Spanish referees from officiating the Madrid side in that competition: “It would have been terrible.”

The channel also said Vinicius was “less protected than other stars”, before ending with: “I can’t imagine something like that at Can Barça.”
