Espanyol have no room for error against Racing

Winning is now Espanyol’s overriding priority against Racing. They travel to El Sardinero today after four matches without a victory, with the relegation zone just one point away. In 16th place on 8 points, Espanyol are level with their opponents, giving the fixture immediate importance.
It is the first of three matches in a week, a run that could shape the team’s course and the future of Manolo González as head coach. A win would take Espanyol to 11 points and move them above a direct rival. It would also provide a lift before the next two fixtures: a cup match at Sestao on Tuesday, followed by a visit to La Cerámica next Friday.
The need to turn things around is sharpened by memories of the 18-match winless run the team endured last year. Espanyol have shown signs of improvement in their last two outings, against Málaga and Atlético, but let both slip in stoppage time after conceding goals following collective lapses. The message around the team is therefore focused both on recent progress and on seeing matches through to the final whistle.
Cabrera had called for better management of the closing minutes. His reference to « otro fútbol » was about managing a match to protect a lead. Manolo, meanwhile, stressed that responsibility did not rest with the players alone: he spoke of a collective effort and the need to prevent opposition transitions late in games. « The step forward must come from everyone, not just the players », he said.
The coach has also said he does not feel his job is on the line in this match: « I don’t have that perception, either from the dressing room or from the club. » A defeat accompanied by a poor performance is nevertheless described as a possible factor in deepening the crisis and putting Manolo’s position at greater risk; that outcome is not presented as a decision already made.
The line-up remains uncertain. Manolo could keep a back five, given Racing’s use of numerous attackers at home, or return to a back four. He said the squad would be the same as for the match against Atlético, with the same players available as the previous week, when the absences of Kike García and Jofre were mentioned.
Tactically, Manolo described Racing as a side able to attack both through possession and on the transition, committing plenty of players forward. He highlighted the need to manage their sustained attacks, cut out individual errors and move the ball forward quickly. « It is important not to let any more points slip away », he said. The match at El Sardinero will show whether the improvement Espanyol have displayed can finally bring a win.
