Roma will host Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday, 14 October 2026, at the Stadio Olimpico. The fixture follows the Roman club’s return to the competition: Roma recently ended a seven-season absence by earning a 1-1 draw against Fenerbahçe, who had also been coached by Mourinho in the past.

Real Madrid go into the reunion with the stronger historical record. The teams have met 12 times, with the Spanish club winning eight, losing three and drawing once. Real have also won their last four matches without conceding. Their most recent meeting was eight years ago; in Rome, Real won five of their previous six visits.

Mourinho managed Roma from 2021 to 2024. During that spell, the club had modest results in the Italian league but won the inaugural edition of the Europa Conference League and reached the Europa League final. Roma had also finished second in the Champions League in 1984. Last season, it placed third in the Italian league, securing a return to the competition after a memorable first year for Gian Piero Gasperini.

Gasperini, a Europa League winner with Atalanta, has lost only four of his last 24 matches in the Champions League group or league phase.
