Amina Orfi beat Nouran Gohar to qualify for the final of the Egyptian International Squash Championship. The world number one claimed her first win over her rival after losing their five previous meetings.
The match was played on a glass court in front of the pyramids and lasted 71 minutes. Despite the intense rivalry between the players, Orfi won 3-1. The games ended 11-9, 8-11, 10-12 and 6-11. The result halted a run that had until then been entirely in Gohar’s favour and gives Orfi a chance to pursue another title in the tournament.
In the final, the Egyptian will face compatriot Hania El Hammamy, the world number two. Orfi is targeting a second title in the diamond tournaments and her first triumph at the Egyptian Open. The final will therefore bring together the world’s top two players.
El Hammamy booked her place in the final by beating Malaysia’s Sivasangari Subramaniam, ranked fifth in the world, in their semi-final on Thursday evening. Orfi will face an opponent who has also come through the final hurdle before the title match.
