Haitham Hassan assists as Celtic fall 4-1 to Benfica

Haitham Hassan provided an assist in Celtic’s 4-1 defeat to Benfica in the Europa League. At the Luz stadium, the match on the second matchday of the league phase saw the Egypt international come on after the break and contribute to his side’s only goal.

Benfica moved ahead in the fifth minute when Jhon Durán converted a penalty, and Alexander Bah extended the lead in the 23rd. Celtic pulled one back in the 63rd minute. Introduced at the start of the second half, Hassan set up Camilo Durán for the goal, making it 3-1.

Celtic continued to push for a way back, but Benfica held firm. Vangelis Pavlidis scored the hosts’ fourth in the 89th minute to seal a 4-1 result.

The defeat was Celtic’s second in the league phase. In the first matchday, the club had lost 3-1 to Ferencváros. Benfica, meanwhile, secured a home victory by making the most of its attacking efficiency. Hassan’s assist gave Celtic a goal in a match where the gap had widened in the first half, but it could not prevent Benfica from taking the points.
